    About Water Wagons

Water wagons, or “water tankers” as they’re also known, provide construction, mining, farming, and other operations with the means to easily move huge quantities of water to where it’s needed. Pumping equipment, spray nozzles, and/or water cannons mounted on the machine at the front, sides, and rear are used to distribute the water. Construction crews use the water, for example, to suppress dust that can be stirred up by multiple heavy-duty machines working simultaneously, thus hampering workers’ visibility and introducing possible health-related risks. Water tanks also deliver water to help in soil-compaction efforts in the building of new buildings, roads, airport runways, bridges, and more.

    Water Wagon Types

New and used water wagons are available in a variety of makes and models, as well as customized models. Typically, these machines include a large water tank that can transport anywhere from 500 to more than 5,000 gallons (1,890 to 18,900 liters) of water that’s attached to an enclosed tractor cab. Along with in-cab controls for water distribution, water tanks often include hose reels, baffles to control side-to-side water surges, and rugged off-road tires.

Among the more popular water wagon models on MachineryTrader.com are several variants of the Caterpillar 631; these are essentially wheel tractors equipped with water tanks rather than scraper units. Caterpillar also offers a Cat Water Delivery & Control System as an option for its Cat 777G and 785D Off-Highway Truck Bare Chassis truck platform. The system operates independent of the truck’s engine, which Cat says results in fuel savings, the elimination of overwatering, better spray pattern control, and other benefits. The system also supports automatic shutoff when the water tank empties, self-cleaning spray nozzles, joystick water cannon operation, and remote tank controls.
