Excavator models for sale range from mini excavators that have operating weights of less than 1 ton (0.9 metric ton) to massive mining and quarrying models that can weigh more than 1,000 tons (907.2 metric tons). The majority of excavators are tracked crawlers, but you can also buy wheeled excavators, which can be driven on the road, move quickly around the job site, and typically provide greater mobility and maneuverability. Mini excavators are useful in tight, urban spaces, as well as in residential applications and landscaping. Zero tail-swing designs, in which the rear of the machine’s rotating upper structure doesn’t protrude beyond the undercarriage, are increasingly popular with buyers and renters of smaller machines. This is because the operator doesn’t have to worry about the rear of the cab swinging into any walls, posts, or people who might be behind the machine while digging.

Special-application excavators, meanwhile, include long-reach dredgers, dragline models with a boom and a bucket, and scrap handlers with elevating cabs that provide better visibility. Demolition crawler machines may come with high-reach arms, protective debris guards, shielded cabs, and filtered ventilation systems for the operator.
