    About Water Trucks

A water truck typically consists of a cab and chassis that may be styled like a pickup truck, semi-truck, or articulated truck, and incorporates a tank body complete with pumps, hoses, and sprayers. Many trucks in the Water Trucks category have the appropriate drive systems, tires, and stability features for off-road operations and are well-suited for use on difficult terrain.

Tank capacities typically range from 2,000 to 10,000 gallons (7,570 to 37,850 liters), although some medium- and heavy-duty models fall outside of this range. Most water truck tanks are made from stainless steel or aluminum and don’t typically require special-material considerations that may be otherwise necessary with other liquids, such as corrosives. One exception is trucks that transport potable drinking water, which requires the use of a food-grade tank. Depending on its intended use, a water truck may have a tank with one large compartment or one that includes several divided compartments.

    Construction, Mining & More

Although water trucks are designed for the basic purpose of transporting water, these versatile vehicles are used for a variety of applications. You’ll often find water trucks used in construction and mining operations to aid in dust control and other applications. Tank trucks outfitted with sprayers on the front, side, or rear, for example, lay down thin layers of water to prevent dirt from kicking up into the air and causing visibility and safety issues while heavy earthmoving equipment is in use. Water trucks are also important for road construction projects for wetting down dry ground and helping create a smoother surface for asphalt paving.

Some water trucks may secondarily be used for fire prevention and firefighting. Although models in this category aren’t expressly designed for these purposes, they come in handy for saturating nearby terrain that poses a fire hazard or for containing or extinguishing a sudden, unexpected fire until a proper fire truck arrives. The latter is particularly important for construction and mining operations located in remote areas.

    Popular Makes & Models

Because a wide range of trucks can be equipped with water tank bodies, manufacturers in this space include such companies as Caterpillar, Ford, International, Kenworth, and Peterbilt that are known for their on-highway and vocational trucks and construction equipment expertise. Additionally, while this category consists of complete water trucks, it’s possible to buy water tanks separately.

Examples of medium-duty vocational and other water truck models include the Freightliner Business Class M2 106, Ford F-750, Peterbilt 348, Kenworth T370, and International 4300. If you’re seeking a purpose-built off-road truck, however, the Cat 725 articulated truck is a popular model that’s often coupled with a water tank and Cat’s Water Delivery System, which is available as a factory option or retrofit kit.
