    About Komatsu Excavators

Komatsu has been manufacturing hydraulic excavators since 1968, introduced the first ever hybrid hydraulic excavator in 2008, and continues to innovate in the space today. The company’s diggers fall into one of three categories at MachineryTrader.com: mini excavators (up to 12,000 pounds), crawler excavators, and wheel excavators. While a machine’s operating weight determines which category it falls into, you’ll find quite a few other differences among them such as boom and stick lengths, maximum digging depths, bucket capacities, and more.

    2014 Komatsu PC35MR

    Small, Medium & Large Excavators

Komatsu categorizes its machines a bit differently with small excavators up to 25,000 pounds, mid-size excavators between 25,001 and 70,000 pounds, and large excavators between 70,001 and 260,000 pounds. The company notes that many of its large excavators are well suited for mining operations where they can move large amounts of earth and make it easier for crews to get to the valuable materials below.

Komatsu also offers a wide range of technologies, all of which fall under the Smart Construction banner, that unlock new abilities for its excavators. One example is Intelligent Machine Control, which is available on a handful of Komatsu excavators, including the PC210LCi-10, PC210LCi-11, PC360LCi-11, PC390LCi-11, and PC490LCi-11. The system uses a guidance system for more accurate and efficient operation. To use it, you enter information about the grade or slope that you want to achieve, and then the machine ensures that you don’t go past that depth or angle.

    Komatsu Mini Excavators

One example of a Komatsu mini excavator is the PC35MR-5, which has an operating weight of 7,993 pounds with a canopy and 8,324 pounds with a cab. It uses a Komatsu 3D88E-7, 3-cylinder engine that produces 24.4 horsepower (18.2 kilowatts) at 2,200 rpm. It also has a bucket capacity of 0.07 and 0.24 cubic yards, a maximum digging reach of 18.5 feet (5.6 meters), and a bucket digging force of 6,722 pounds. Other popular models in this category are the Komatsu PC20, PC26, PC27, PC30, PC35, PC45, PC50, and PC55.

    2014 Komatsu PC360 LC-10

    Komatsu Crawler Excavators

There are thousands of Komatsu crawler excavators for sale at MachineryTrader.com, making it the largest excavator category for the company by far. The PC360 is one of the most popular model groups. One example is the PC360LC-11, powered by a Komatsu SAA6D114E-6 four-cylinder engine that produces 257 horsepower (191.6 kilowatts). The excavator has a bucket capacity of 0.89 to 2.56 cubic yards, a maximum digging reach of just over 39 feet (11.9 meters), a bucket digging force of up to 50,930 pounds, and an operating weight of 78,645 to 80,547 pounds. Other Komatsu crawler excavators include the PC78, PC88, PC138, PC160, PC200, PC210, PC220, PC228, PC240, PC290, PC300, PC400, PC450, and PC490.

    Komatsu Wheel Excavators

Komatsu primarily markets its wheel excavators in the European and Asian markets, but you’ll still find them for sale in the United States. The PW160 is a popular model group, with one specific model being the PW160-10, powered by a 149-horsepower (111.1 kilowatt) Komatsu SAA4D107E-2 engine. It has an operating weight of 37,554 to 40,664 pounds, a bucket capacity of up to 1.7 cubic yards, and a maximum digging reach of 31.1 feet (9.5 meters). The PW98, PW140, and PW180 are other examples of popular models in this category.
