Volvo Demos Remote Control Functionality For Select Large Crawler Excavators
Volvo CE demonstrated a new Short Range Remote Control solution at the recent ConExpo-Con/Agg convention that lets operators control a Volvo large crawler excavator from up to 328 feet (100 meters) away. Developed with CE Engineering Solutions, the system enhances worker safety on demolition jobsites where falling objects might pose a risk and when poor ground conditions could cause the excavator to roll over. It’s also well-suited to piling or drilling tasks where a different perspective can help operators better keep track of the task at hand.
The Particulars
Volvo’s remote control system is currently available by request for the 225-horsepower (168-kilowatt) EC250E, 253-HP (178-kW) EC300E, and 303-HP (226-kW) EC350E excavators, but Volvo expects to extend support to more machines in the future.
The system comprises a radio transmitter and a radio receiver that allow for two-way communication between the operator and machine. The operator can turn the system on or off using an in-cab switch, and a light beacon located on the excavator’s exterior informs other workers when remote operation is active.
Customization Options
Volvo says Short Range Remote Control can be customized upon request to meet a customer’s requirements. North American and European customers already using the solution have noted how easy the system was to integrate into their operations, how simple it is to use, and that it has enhanced safety, Volvo says.
