    About Volvo Construction Equipment

The origins of Volvo CE (Construction Equipment) can be traced back to 1832, when Johan Theofron Munktell started a machine workshop in Sweden and separately in 1844 when Jean and Carl Gerhard Bolinder founded Kungsholmens Gjuteri & Maskin Verkstad in Stockholm. Before merging in 1932 to form Bolinder-Munktell, which Volvo acquired in 1950, the companies were individually credited with such accomplishments as manufacturing Sweden’s first locomotive, combustible engine, and tractor. By 1954, Volvo had developed its first wheel loader, the H10, which introduced design concepts like an attachment bracket, double-acting lift cylinders, and parallel movement. The H10 was just the starting point for Volvo, which officially changed its name to Volvo CE in 1995 and continues to produce innovative construction equipment.

    Volvo L60H Wheel Loader

    Wheel Loaders

After introducing the H10 wheel loader in 1954, Volvo added features like Power Shift and four-wheel drive to its wheel loaders during the mid-1960s. In 1969, Volvo wheel loaders were to the first to include a hydraulic attachment bracket. Volvo followed with a long period of innovation over the 1970s and 1980s, introducing features like a load-sensing steering system, an automatic shifting system (APS), and Comfort Drive Control (CDC) joystick steering. Possibly the most notable Volvo wheel loader was the L150 introduced in 1991, which included Volvo’s lift-arm system TP-linkage (improving breakout capacity), the Contronic electronic monitoring and control system, and the comfortable Care Cab.

    Excavators

In 1998, Volvo CE acquired Samsung Construction Equipment, a purchase that helped launch a whole new generation of excavators with Volvo technology in 1999. Volvo CE followed up these models with the B Series (powered by Volvo engines) in 2001, the D Series (featuring improved fuel efficiency) in 2011, and the E Series (boasting Stage IV engines) in 2014. In recent years, Volvo has developed electric excavators with performance equivalent to their diesel-powered counterparts. Volvo’s newest excavators include advanced technology like Volvo Active Control and the Volvo Dig Assist machine control system to cut within an inch of the target grade. Volvo’s vast excavator selection includes mini excavators as well as crawler and wheel excavators.

    Dump Trucks & Rigid Haulers

Volvo offers a wide variety of on-highway and off-highway dump trucks. The off-highway lineup benefited from Volvo’s acquisition of Terex’s hauler business in 2014, and Volvo has steadily improved upon the legacy Terex designs in recent years. For example, the high-productivity R100 brings a 105-ton (95-metric-ton) payload capacity and a 79-cubic-yard (60.4-cubic-meter) heaped body volume to mining and quarrying applications, improving cycle times and uptime. In addition, the R100’s fuel efficiency is enhanced by an Economy shifting mode, an adjustable auto-idle shutdown feature, and Volvo Dynamic Shift Control, which selects the best gear, engine speed, and torque for the job. Volvo’s Smart View 360-degree camera system improves jobsite safety by increasing drivers’ awareness of their surroundings.

    Paving Equipment

Volvo CE acquired Ingersoll Rand's road development equipment division in 2007, adding to Volvo’s long history in the paving industry. The complete lineup of Volvo paving equipment includes track and wheel asphalt pavers, screeds, and other specialty paving equipment like compactors. Modern Volvo paving equipment includes intelligent features like Compact Assist with Density Direct, which refers to Volvo’s exclusive Intelligent Compaction system capable of making and displaying real-time density calculations on an in-cab display.

    Loader Backhoes & Motor Graders

In the early 2000s, Volvo CE launched its own lines of backhoe loaders and motor graders; these machines were produced until 2014, when Volvo CE transferred the development and production of the machines over to Volvo CE’s SDLG brand. A wide selection of used Volvo backhoe loaders and motor graders are regularly for sale on MachineryTrader.com.
