Straw blowers and hydroseeders let grounds crews and other operators cover large areas of ground with straw, grass, and other seed types in a very short period as compared to seeding by hand. Whereas straw blowers do exactly what their name suggests at distances up to and beyond 65 feet, hydroseeders use a process that mixes water, seed, mulch, and a tackifier—as well as possibly fertilizer, lime, herbicides, bio-stimulants, and other materials depending on the job—into a slurry mixture that’s sprayed across the surface. Both machines are used for seeding and spready straw across football fields, golf courses, highway and interstate roadways, and residential and commercial lawns.

Both machine types provide landscape contractors, construction crews, and other users an alternative to spreading straw and planting grass seed by hand or via laying sod. Often one-man-operable, these machines are used in erosion control, dust reduction, and weed prevention applications. Hydroseeding is generally considered a more cost-effective and less labor-intensive approach than sodding large areas, as well as much faster than broadcasting dry seed. Both hydroseeders and straw blowers are also well-regarded for their ability to quickly, easily, and evenly cover hillsides, steep slopes, and other uneven terrains where seed might wash out or be difficult to reach. Although models vary, straw blowers can often cover an acre of more of area in less than an hour, distributing 10 or more tons of straw an hour.
Typical Features
Components and features of newer hydroseeders can include Tier 4 Final diesel engines, electronically controlled hydraulic systems, variable speed agitators, and remote control agitating ability. These machines’ tanks are either built into a vehicle or towed behind on a trailer, and can hold thousands of gallons of slurry that can be spread 100 feet or longer, depending on the machine. In addition to usually supporting the customer’s grass seed and fertilizer of choice, hydroseeders can typically spread other seed types, such as wildflowers. Straw blower features and components can include operator stations with cushioned seating, feed trays with variable-speed conveyor systems, multiple beaters to provide smoother material processing, adjustable flails, and 360-degree cannons.
