About Personnel Lifts

Personnel lifts use hydraulic, pneumatic, or mechanical extension or contraction mechanisms to lift workers and their tools to heights of 30 feet (9 meters) or more. Also known as a “man lift,” “mast lift,” “pusharound,” “aerial work platform,” “cherry picker,” and “spider lift,” a personnel lift is similar to a boom lift in that it provides a solid, safe foundation from which to work above the ground either indoors or outdoors. Although personnel lifts have shorter maximum working heights than boom lifts, they’re much lighter and more compact, making them a good choice for harder-to-reach areas and where excessive weight on flooring may be problematic. Their compact size also makes them easy to maneuver through doorways, load into elevators, and transport between jobsites. For instance, JLG’s popular 20MVL mast vertical lift is just 2.5 ft (0.75 m) wide but has a working height of 26.2 ft (8 m).

Depending on the model, a personnel lift may accommodate one worker or two, although with specific weight restrictions in place. In addition to self-propelled and drivable models, the segment includes one- or two-person pusharound machines. Both types are well-suited for a wide array of applications on construction, warehouse, retail, and other jobsites, including maintenance, painting, renovation, repair, stocking, and changing lights. Many personnel lifts are powered by electric motors and batteries; they provide low-noise, emissions-free operation that makes them good candidates for indoor use.
