Crawler cranes are different from other traditional cranes in that they run on tracks rather than wheels. This gives them the ability to go over rough terrain and set up for a job a little more quickly than wheel-based alternatives, which may require some extra leveling for stability.

Something to keep in mind is that due to the size and weight of crawler cranes, they tend to be more challenging to move from place to place, but you can’t argue with their performance once they’re on the job.

One major manufacturer of crawler cranes, and lattice boom crawlers in particular, is Manitowoc. The company’s cranes range in maximum capacity from 80 tons up to 2500 tons, main boom length from 200 feet up to 360 feet, fixed jib on main boom from 60 feet to almost 140 feet, and luffing jib on main boom from 170 feet to just under 375 feet.

Other manufacturers and brands to look for in the crawler crane space include American, Kobelco, Liebherr, Link-Belt, and Terex.
