    About Attenuator Trucks

    Ford F-750 Attenuator Truck

Attenuator Trucks are known by many names, including scorpion trucks, truck-mounted attenuators (TMAs), shadow vehicles, crash trucks, safety trucks, traffic control trucks, cushion trucks, hero trucks, and impact attenuator trucks. They warn drivers approaching construction zones and serve to dampen the impact of collisions while providing a barrier to separate workers on the roadside from vehicles traveling on the road.

Attenuator trucks are equipped with kinetic absorption devices, or TMAs, impact attenuators, crash cushions, or crash attenuators, that reduce the force of vehicle collisions. This decreases the risk of injury to both the driver and any construction workers on the site. The trucks also provide highly visible warnings that help make drivers aware of a work site. Arrow boards, work lights, and strobe lights signal the potential hazard from a distance to give vehicles time to react appropriately.

    How They Work

The truck-mounted attenuators serve much of the same purpose as safety buckets or barrels, which are usually filled with either sand or water, to absorb the momentum of a crashing vehicle and bring it to a stop. The attenuators use crushable materials to make a crumple zone that absorbs energy in a crash.

Scorpion truck-mounted attenuators from manufacturer TrafFix Devices have strut and cartridge sections that are linked on a support frame with curved side rails made of corrosion-resistant aluminum tubes. The rails provide full-width impact protection and redirect vehicles away from the rear of the truck.
