Air compressors are used across many industries, ranging from construction and farming to manufacturing and pharmaceutical, and even dry cleaning. Air compressors pressurize and store air to be used for tasks such as inflating tires or operating tools like air brushes or sandblasters. The three most common air compressors, in terms of operation, are reciprocating, rotary screw, and centrifugal. Reciprocating compressors are the most common; these machines use a piston driven by either an electric motor or gas engine to pull in air, pressurize it, and force it into a storage tank for later use.

Types Of Air Compressors

Air compressors are available in numerous shapes, sizes, and types. In addition to gas, diesel, or electric, there are also choices between stationary and portable models. Large, stationary units come in oil-flooded, oil-free, and centrifugal versions. These compressors have higher horsepower and large storage tanks for longer periods of uninterrupted use, but can’t be moved around a site as needed. Portable options include pancake compressors and hotdog compressors, named for their shapes which resemble to the foods, on the small end, and twin stack, wheelbarrow, and towable versions for larger needs that can easily move to different locations.
