Founded in 1912, Yanmar original manufactured gas engines. The company then moved on to vertical oil engines in 1920, and to horizontal oil engines in 1921, which is also the year the company adopted its current name.

The two main focuses of Yanmar early on were the agriculture and fishing industries, both of which benefited from oil engine models. Today, the company still supports farming and marine customers, but has also expanded to include construction, industrial engine and power, cogeneration and air conditioning systems, and more.

When it comes to machinery, Yanmar sells tractors for use in agriculture, but also builds excavators, skid steers, tracked loaders, tracked carriers, and wheel loaders for use in construction. These pieces of equipment build on nearly 50 years of experience since 1968, when the company introduced its first mini excavator.

Yanmar also sells compact, portable generators, as well as larger ones contained in its YEG line; fresh water pumps, semi-trash pumps, trash pumps, and diaphragm pumps; and diesel lighting towers with manual mast-lift up or hydraulic mast-lift up configurations.
