Whether they’re helping to lift I-beams to the top of a building construction site or moving cargo containers around a shipyard, tower cranes are built for handling heavy loads in a wide range of environments. With maximum heights of over 250 feet (much more if attached to a building) and maximum lifting capacities of up to 19 tons, these tall pieces of machinery truly tower above city skylines operated either by a worker in the cab or by remote control on land.

Some of the most common types of tower cranes include self-erecting tower cranes, flat top tower cranes, hammerhead tower cranes, and luffing jib tower cranes, among others. These styles are differentiated based on their maximum lifting power, maximum height, and general application. But not all models of tower cranes hold true to this formula. For instance, Liebherr’s MK Series of cranes brings together the portability of a mobile crane and the lifting capabilities of a traditional tower crane. Other leading brands over time in this space include Comedil (Terex), JASO, Potain (Manitowoc), and Rhino.
