Once timber is down and processed, a log loader’s work begins. As a forestry equipment category, log loaders encompass a wide variety of machines including stationary, trailer-mounted, and self-propelled machines with various lifting and moving mechanisms, but all are designed to get logs loaded for transport.

Knuckleboom loaders are stationary or trailer-mounted, purpose-built machines that are designed to work in very specific environments. Stationary loaders are handy for keeping loads moving in mill yards and often come equipped with electrical motors, whereas trailer-mounted loaders can go wherever a truck can pull them and are often diesel-powered. If you need to retrieve logs situated away from easy truck access, a self-propelled log loader is hard to beat. These machines come in both wheel and track varieties; track loaders are often excavators with grapple attachments instead of buckets.

Log loaders are available in many sizes and configurations, and are produced by a number of major equipment manufacturers, including Caterpillar, Hitachi, John Deere, Komatsu, Link-Belt, Tigercat, and others. You’ll find a variety of new and used log loaders for sale on MachineryTrader.com.
