    About Loader Backhoes

Also referred to as “backhoe loaders,” “diggers,” or simply “backhoes,” new and used loader backhoes are available in compact, midsized, and larger models that are adept at grading, surfacing, loading, lifting, material handling, excavating, trenching, and other jobs. Around since the 1950s, loader backhoes can usually be driven on public roads, thus enabling operators to drive them from job to job, saving them the time and expense of trailering the machines and towing them around with a truck.

    Versatility

Construction companies, farmers, landscapers, mining businesses, home builders, and street repair crews are some of the many operations that have been using loader backhoes for decades, and for good reason. Composed of three components—tractor, front loader, and rear-located backhoe—these versatile, agile machines can cost-effectively perform a long list of diverse tasks, either on their own or when paired with any of the numerous attachment types they support.

    Backhoe Features

Depending on the model, loader backhoes offer dig depths measuring from less than 10 to more than 17 feet, and stick extensions can extend digging depths out even further. Many can also haul up to several thousand pounds of material in their front loaders while maintaining the agility to navigate congested jobsites. In addition to diesel Tier 4- and Stage V-compliant engines kicking out anywhere from less than 50 to 130 horsepower or more, zero-emissions electric models such as the 580 EV from CASE will likely continue entering the market in coming years.

    Productivity & Comfort

Along with engines and transmissions that support power-boosting and fuel-economy modes, loader backhoes have given their modern machines specialized lifting and four wheel-drive systems, as well as quick coupler systems that make attaching an auger, thumb, compactor, breaker, hammer, spike, grapple, or other attachment quick and easy. Roomy cabs offering enhanced operator visibility are also becoming more common, as are intuitive cab controls and ergonomic layouts, automated functionality, and telematics solutions such as John Deere’s JDLink and CASE’s SiteWatch that monitor machine health and share performance-related data.
