    About Genie

Founded in 1966, Genie manufactures material-handling and aerial lift machines. Material-handling equipment includes telehandlers and Super Hoist, Genie Lift, Superlift Contractor, and Superlift Advantage material lift machines. Aerial lift machines include Xtra Capacity (or XC) lifts designed for higher capacities, aerial work platforms, boom lifts (articulated, telescopic, and trailer-mounted), electric lifts, scissor lifts (slab and rough-terrain), and vertical mast lifts. Terex Corporation acquired Genie in 2002 for $75 million. Genie is now part of Terex’s Work Platforms division, but it operates under the Genie brand name in aviation, construction, entertainment, government, industrial, military, rental, retail, warehouse, and other sectors. The company has headquarters in Bothell, Washington, and a presence in more than 80 countries across six continents.

    Company Evolution

Before founding Genie Industries, Bud Bushnell was working with a company developing a lifting device powered by bottled compressed air. The company went out of business in 1966, but Bushnell bought its inventory and the rights to the device, which he patented and named the Genie Hoist, a name inspired by the compressed air’s “magic in the bottle” feat of raising and lowering the machine. By 1969, Genie had received 1,500 orders for the manually operated, portable hoist.

In 1974, Genie released the Genie Teletower, essentially a platform built on multiple Genie Hoists. In the 1980s, the company began focusing on larger Z-lift self-propelled boom lifts that featured steel construction and engines and hydraulics. Genie says the launch of the Z-30/20 in 1984 set a new standard for up-and-over lifting. In 1992, the S-60 became Genie’s first boom machine designed for the construction market. In 1997, it launched its first scissor lifts. During the early 2000s came “Super Booms” with lift heights up to 135 feet (41 meters), including the S-125 stick and Z-135 articulating models. Prior to 2020, Genie introduced Fuel Electric hybrid technology for boom lifts, and its Xtra Capacity booms.

    Lift Products

A host of Genie lift models are particularly popular on MachineryTrader.com, including the compact, easy-to-maneuver GTH-5519 telehandler with a 5,500-pound (2,495-kilogram) maximum lift capacity and an 18.8-ft (5.7-m) lift height. and the larger GTH-1056 with a 10,000-lb (4,536-kg) lift capacity and a 56.6-ft (17.2-m) lift height. Slab scissor lifts include the GS-1930, which Genie sells in hydraulic and E-Drive configurations with a 25.3-ft (7.7-m) working height and 500-lb (227-kg) platform capacity. Also popular is the GS-2632, which has a 32.1-ft (9.8-m) working height. Genie offers the S-65 telescopic boom in several configurations, including an HF (high-float) version designed for heavy-lifting duties on turf conditions. The Z-45 articulating boom lift model includes an XC version with a 51.5-ft (15.7-m) working height and 660-lb (300-kg) restricted and 1,000-lb (454-kg) unrestricted platform capacities.
