    About Gehl

Gehl is a longtime leading designer and manufacturer of compact construction and agriculture equipment. The company’s products include telescopic handlers, wheel and track skid-steer loaders, articulated wheel loaders, and compact excavators. Once known as the Gehl Company, the Gehl brand is now owned by the Manitou Group, a French manufacturer of material-handling, mobile elevating work platform, and earthmoving equipment.

    Foundry Expansion

Gehl’s roots go back to 1859, when Louis Lucas started a blacksmith shop and foundry in West Bend, Wisconsin, to supply local growers with farm implements and machinery. In 1889, Lucas Foundry released the Hexelbank Ensilage Cutter, an $11.50 machine that Gehl says revolutionized the way farmers processed food for their livestock. A year later, Charles Siberzahn acquired Lucas Foundry and renamed it Siberzahn Manufacturing Company.

John Gehl bought that company in 1902 with two business partners, and four years later, his three brothers Nicolaus, Michael, and Henry joined him to create Gehl Brothers Manufacturing. Early products included a silo filler, maneuverable manure spreaders, and a forage harvester introduced in 1942. After becoming Gehl Company in 1967, the firm began to manufacture skid steers in the early 1970s. In 1973, a new German marketing subsidiary introduced Gehl products to the EMEA (Europe, Middle East, and Africa) region.

Gehl Company expanded from its agricultural roots into the construction equipment market with products such as the Dynalift telehandler it acquired in 1988 and asphalt paving equipment such as the Scavenger Sludge Spreader, which won an innovation award in 1991. The company’s acquisition of Mustang Manufacturing Company in 1997 gave Gehl a stronger footing in the skid-steer market.

Prior to becoming a wholly owned subsidiary of Manitou Group in 2008, Gehl entered a strategic alliance with Manitou in 2004 in a deal that saw the companies distributing select models from each other’s telehandler lineups. At ConExpo 2020, Gehl introduced its 165E fully electric skid-steer concept with a lithium-ion battery system.

    Gehl Product Lines

As of summer 2023, Gehl offers several series of telehandlers with lift capacities ranging from 2,200 to 12,000 pounds (998 to 5,443 kilograms) and maximum lift heights from 14 to more than 55 feet (4.3 to 16.8 meters). The company’s AL and ALT series of articulated wheel loaders offer static tipping loads from 3,411 to 10,975 lbs (1,547 to 4,978 kg) and maximum lifting heights from 10.33 ft (3.15 m) under the bucket pivot point to a 17.1-ft (5.2-m) lifting height below the forks.

Gehl’s wheel skid-steer line includes radial lift and vertical lift units with operating capacities of 1,049 to 3,300 lbs (476 to 1,497 kg). Its track skid-steer family ranges from 1,499 to 4,572 lbs (680 to 2,074 kg) of operating capacity, and is also available in radial and vertical lift configurations.

In addition to construction and agriculture equipment, Gehl also offers a wide array of Manitou attachments for sale, including brooms, grapples, buckets, cold planers, pushing blades, concrete mixers, forks, post drivers, sod rollers, and many more.
