    About Dumpers

Dumpers (also often called “site dumpers”) are machines that move bulk materials on a worksite. They are available with wheels or tracks and have rigid or articulated chassis. The skip (or bucket) sits either in front of or behind the operator station. However, that may be relative, because some models have seats and controls that swivel 180 degrees to put the operator in optimal position for loading and unloading or driving. The skip may unload from the back, side, or front, depending on whether the load rides in front of or behind the driver.

While some dumpers have small platforms for the operator to stand on, many have seats that may or may not feature roll-over protection (ROPS) frames for improved safety. Others have fully-enclosed cabs, some of which are heated to allow for comfortable operation during the fall and winter, but regardless of the style of cab, most dumpers offer 360 degrees of visibility.

    Wacker Neuson DW60 Dumper

Site dumpers typically work in tandem with an excavator or a similar piece of equipment that loads dirt, rock, and other materials into the skip, although some models, like the Wacker Neuson D10 track dumper, have the option to attach a self-loading shovel for added versatility. They often have capacities ranging from 2,000 to 22,000 pounds (907 and 9,979 kilograms), making them ideal for small- to medium-sized jobs when compared to larger-capacity dump trucks. That more compact size also comes in handy for working in locations with tight quarters or height and width restrictions.

    Popular Examples

One of the more popular dumper models is the Wacker Neuson DW60 wheel dumper. Powered by a 73.8-horsepower (55-kilowatt) Tier 4 Final Perkins engine, the DW60 has an operating weight of 10,728 lbs (4,866 kg) and maximum payload capacity of 13,228 lbs (6,000 kg). The skip has a leveled, heaped, and water capacity of 3.07, 4.19, and 2.17 cubic yards (2.35, 3.2, and 1.66 cubic meters), respectively. It comes standard with a ROPS frame and there is an option to add an awning. It also has a top speed of 16 mph (26 km/h).

Another example is the JCB 9T-I site dumper, which features a 74-hp (55-kW) Tier 4 Final JCB EcoMAX engine. This machine has a max payload capacity of 19,842 lbs (9,000 kg) and a max bucket capacity of 5.9 yd3 (4.5 m3). While it comes standard with a ROPS/FOPS level II folding frame, there is also an option for a folding ROPS frame as well as a Sitesafe cab that’s heated and “designed to withstand a front dump impact and side slewing impact from a 29,000-lb (13,154-kg) excavator,” according to JCB.
