Motor graders, sometimes called “road graders” or just “graders,” are one of the most common and easy identifiable pieces of heavy machinery there are, whether they’re designed and used for road construction, snow removal, housing development, agricultural, forestry, or mining applications. With operating weights ranging from less than 35,000 pounds (15,875 kilograms) to more than 150,000 pounds (68,038 kilograms), motor graders consist of a cab, a moldboard (or blade), a circle drive, a drawbar, and other components that collectively work to help operators maintain existing gravel and dirt roads and provide flat, even surface grades to new paved road projects.

These machines also come in handy for removing snow, debris, and other materials, as well as tearing up hard ground when equipped with a ripper attachment. You’ll find graders in smaller sizes offering good maneuverability in tighter work spaces and in larger, more powerful variants that are less fuel-consumption friendly but able to move more material in one pass. In short, motor graders are the machines crews call in to provide a finishing grade after bulldozers and other heavy machines do the rougher grunt work.

In addition to blades ranging from about 8 feet to 24 feet, motor graders variously incorporate steering wheel and joystick control systems, all-wheel-drive capabilities, and Tier 4 Final and Stage V engines that generate anywhere from less than 100 to more than 500 horsepower. Besides supporting rippers, motor graders can support front blades, scarifiers, and other attachments.

Modern motor graders also increasingly include features designed to simplifying operations, maintenance, and repairs while making the working environment more comfortable and efficient, such as high-visibility cabs with air suspension seating, ergonomically designed control consoles, touchscreen displays, rearview mirrors, and heating and cooling systems. Many also come equipped with automation and other technologies, including telematics and monitoring systems, sensors, grade and slope control, auto articulation, blade stability, fuel economy, dual-mode transmissions, and fan reversing. Deere’s line of SmartGrade Motor Graders, for example, feature a mastless grade-control system the manufacturer says simplifies operation for greater productivity.
