    About Crawler Carriers

Crawler carriers are highly versatile machines used in a wide range of industries, including construction, forestry, oil and gas, and utilities. They typically have a maximum load capacity ranging from 5,000 to 50,000 pounds (2,268 to 22,680 kilograms), although some models fall outside that range. Most models consist of an enclosed cab—or include a cage and canopy at the least—that’s attached to a pair of rubber tracks, and most enclosed cabs feature a form of ROPS (rollover protection system) to protect the operator if the carrier overturns.

These machines are often outfitted with dump beds, and such models are sometimes referred to as “crawler dumpers.” Many manufacturers offer a variety of customization options, however, to adapt a machine for a specific purpose. Some models, for example, feature air conditioning and heating to enable using the machine year-round regardless of weather conditions.

    Common Applications

Crawler carriers with dump beds generally carry out a role similar to that of dump trucks, but thanks to their rubber tracks, they can traverse difficult terrain and have access to hard-to-reach areas, making them well-suited for the forestry industry, for example, as they can climb steep inclines and carry tools and materials to and from the jobsite. Some models have a 360-degree rotating platform above the tracks that comes in handy when operating in tight spaces, as well as loading and unloading the carrier’s bed without moving the machine.

Crawler carriers can be customized by adding such features as a flatbed, crane, bucket, or drop-side box, or even an enclosed compartment complete with benches, seatbelts, and windows for transporting workers. Some specialized models are outfitted with a flatbed and a crane located behind the cab to enable loading and unloading cargo without the need for a second piece of equipment.

    Find The Right Crawler Carrier

MachineryTrader.com has hundreds of new and used crawler carriers for sale from such leading manufacturers as IHI, Morooka, PRINOTH, Terramac, and Yanmar, with model years ranging from the 1960s to the present, and prices ranging from $6,000 to $300,000 or more depending on the size, features, and condition of each machine.

One of the more popular models on MachineryTrader.com is the Morooka MST2200 crawler carrier, which is available in several variations, including the most common MST2200VD version. Measuring 20.17 feet (6.1 meters) long, 9.5 ft (2.9 m) wide, and 10.4 ft (3.2 m) tall, the MST2200VD weighs 31,820 pounds (14,433 kilograms) and has a maximum load capacity of 24,255 lbs (11,002 kg). The MST2200VD features a Cat C7.1 T4 Final engine that produces 250 horsepower (186 kilowatts) of rated power and a hydrostatic transmission. The MST2200VDR offers similar specs but has an upper structure that rotates 360 degrees.
