    About Compactors

Compactors use weight and force to flatten out various materials, like soil, gravel, or waste. For road construction purposes, compactors are helpful both for grading the dirt and levelling out the gravel. In a waste management setting, a compactor could be used to flatten garbage in a landfill to free up space for further waste collection. Compactors vary greatly in size and can be either large, self-propelled machines or smaller implements designed to be towed behind a tractor or other vehicle.

    Types Of Compactors

There are a number of subcategories within the compactor market, but the most common is the smooth drum compactor, which is typically available with a single drum in the front and standard wheels in the back, or as a tandem two-drum configuration. Combination compactors are similar but have a smooth drum in the front and a row of pneumatic tires in the back designed to aid in compaction.

Padfoot compactors that have the same style of roller covered in pads or spikes and can come in single or tandem configurations. Padfoot models are often used as landfill compactors, and often have a dozer blade in front of the roller. Pneumatic compactors forgo large steel rollers in favor of rows of pneumatic tires in front and back; they usually have seven, nine, or 11 pneumatic tires split between the front and rear.

In addition to larger compactors, there are also walk-behind compactors, or plate compactors, that cover a smaller area but don’t require investment in a larger vehicle. And then there are tow-behind compactors, designed to be towed by a tractor or other vehicle for use in landscaping and for other similar uses.
