    About Case Construction Equipment

Case Construction Equipment (CE) is a leading global manufacturer of heavy-duty, “yellow iron” machinery for roadbuilding, excavation, material handling, and many other applications.

    Case CE’s Early Beginnings

In 1842, Jerome I. Case started the Racine Threshing Machine Works Company in Racine, Wisconsin. In 1869, as the J.I. Case Company, the firm manufactured the first portable (that is, horse-drawn) steam engine tractor, dubbed “Old No. 1,” which was credited with the advent of road construction. The firm also invented a self-propelled (but horse-steered) traction steam engine in 1876 for highway work. Case led the world in steam engine production in 1886.

Case 580SV Construction King Loader Backhoe

By the turn of the century, the company says it was the leading manufacturer of construction equipment. In 1906, Case started to build steam-powered roller compactors. Case released a line of motorized roadbuilding products in 1912 that included graders, rock crushers, and dump wagons. In the 1920s, its industrial tractors such as the CI and LI models pitched in to help build the roads that greatly expanded commerce and mobility.

In 1947, the company created its Industrial Division, which was separate from its agricultural machinery business and less dependent on the cycle of the seasons. The division would eventually become the Construction Equipment Division. In 1957, Case entered the crawler market with the acquisition of the American Tractor Company (ATC) and its TerraTrack line of small crawler tractors. The companies’ combined engineering staff brought the Model 320 to market as the industry’s first factory-integrated tractor loader/backhoe. That same year, Case debuted its innovative model W-5 to W-12 unit-type wheel loaders in its 4WD Terraload’r line with steerable axles and rigid frames. In 1967, Case’s first articulated wheel loader, the W26, made its debut.

    Mergers & Acquisitions

In 1969, Case acquired the rights to build skid-steer loaders from Universal Industries, home of the Uni-Loader. Case also debuted a powered dozer blade the operator could tilt without getting out of the driver’s seat. The company acquired the excavator business of French manufacturer Poclain in the mid-1970s. Case also partnered with Cummins to form the Consolidated Diesel Company (CDC). Another acquisition, Case’s 1981 purchase of Drott, brought wheeled excavators into the fold.

Case introduced ride control technology to the skid-steer loader market in 1998. In 1999, Fiat Group acquired Case Corporation and merged it with New Holland N.V. to create CNH Global, which included Case Construction Equipment as well as Case IH on the agricultural side. In 2013, CNH Global and Fiat Industrial merged to form CNH International.

In 2017, Case claimed another industry first with its “Project Minotaur” model DL450, a fully integrated, compact dozer loader. An alternative-fuel wheel loader concept, the methane-powered ProjectTETRA, netted Case CE a Good Design Award in 2019. The company introduced the first fully electric backhoe loader, the Project Zeus model 580 EV, in 2020.

Case CE Backhoe Loaders, Dozers, Excavators & Other Product Lines

Case CE offers a bevy of construction machinery, including some fully electric models. As of 2023, here’s a brief look at each of its product lines.

Case is well-known for its backhoe loaders, which are available in center-pivot or side-shift models with either conventional loader arms or a tool carrier design. Among the models in this category are the entry-level Utility Plus and the 580SV Construction King tool carrier model with an Extendahoe.

The unique Case Minotaur DL550 compact dozer loader can operate as a crawler dozer with a chassis-integrated C-frame and 6-way blade, or as a loader with a bucket or powered attachment. Other attachment-bearing machines from Case include compact track loaders and wheeled skid-steer loaders in radial-lift and vertical-lift configurations. These compact loaders come with electro-hydraulic controls and a Creep Speed function.

Case also manufactures crawler dozers with a hydrostatic drive system that can slow or speed up the tracks according to the load on the blade. Compaction equipment made by Case includes double-drum, single-drum, and pneumatic-tire roller compactors for asphalt, soil, and sub-base applications.

Case excavators come in mini, midi, and full-size versions ranging from 2 tons (1.8 metric tons) all the way up to 89 tons (81 mt) in operating weight. The company’s rough-terrain forklifts come with Load Control, which provides automatic mast cushioning while traveling over uneven terrain. Case motor graders come in standard drive or all-wheel drive (AWD) for small to midsize grading applications.

Finally, Case compact wheel loaders are available with various linkage options, whereas its full-size front-end loaders have a payload-weighing system available from the factory. Tractor loaders and skip loaders from Case provide ample power, load stabilization, and a rear PTO.
