    About Deere

In 1956, John Deere formed its Industrial Equipment Division to focus on the development and manufacture of construction machinery. The newly formed division paid immediate dividends with 15 industrial, heavy-duty Deere tractors debuting at the Chicago Road Show in 1957. Just a year later, Deere released the Model 64 hydraulic bulldozer that featured a six-way, power-angle-tilt blade. Deere continued to expand its construction equipment options throughout the 1960s, releasing crawler dozers, forklifts, motor graders, and skid steers. In the 1970s, Deere opened its Deere Davenport Works production facility in Davenport, Iowa, which continues to manufacture many of Deere’s latest and greatest construction and forestry machines.

    Deere 950K Crawler Dozer

    Loader Backhoes

Deere released its first loader backhoe, the 50-horsepower (37.3-kilowatt) JD 310, in 1971. The 100-HP (75-kW), diesel-powered 310L is still a cornerstone of Deere’s backhoe family today, in a lineup that includes compact backhoe loaders as well as midsize and large models. Deere also has a prototype battery-electric backhoe, the E-Power Backhoe, which is designed to provide the level of performance and ease of operation equivalent to the 310L. Deere says that over its lifetime, the E-Power will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by as much as 83 tons, and will eliminate the use of more than 7,300 gallons of diesel fuel.

    Dozers

From the Model 64 to the latest Deere crawler dozers, Deere has continually evolved its dozer family to improve productivity. Some of the newest models feature Deere’s Slope Control system, which helps operators grade smooth planar surfaces by providing real-time cross-slope and main fall-slope percentages on an in-cab monitor. On Deere’s biggest dozers, such as the 1050K, the manufacturer equips a suspended double-bogie undercarriage track frame to optimize ride quality and increase durability. Deere’s bull dozer and crawler dozer series are commonly used in earthmoving, land-clearing, and roadbuilding applications.

    Dump Trucks

Deere-branded articulated off-highway dump trucks are available with 26- to 46-ton (23.6- to 41.7-metric-ton) payload capacities. Current models offer intelligent features like auto-differential lock, payload weighing, and tire-pressure monitoring to increase uptime and improve productivity. The latest Deere E-Series articulated dump trucks are designed with an Eco mode to adjust engine power and transmission settings based on load. Deere also includes a Traction mode to optimize grip on slopes and slippery terrain.

    Excavators

Deere and Hitachi began an excavator supply relationship in the early 1960s, and in 1988, the companies started the Deere-Hitachi manufacturing joint venture to produce excavators in Kernersville, NC, with two factories added later in Brazil and Canada. Although John Deere and Hitachi ended their joint venture in 2022, the two firms began new license and supply agreements where the former joint venture factories will continue to manufacture Deere-branded construction excavators, which include complete lineups of compact (mini), mid-size, and large excavators.

    Forestry Equipment

John Deere’s forestry equipment innovations have transformed the industry. From modifying its Model D tractors into logging winches back in 1937 to the John Deere 743 Tree Harvester (able to harvest two trees per minute) introduced in 1977, Deere has continually worked to increase forestry operations’ productivity and efficiency. Today, Deere offers a full line of forestry and logging equipment, including forwarders, knuckle boom loaders, swing machines, track and wheel feller bunchers, and track and wheel harvesters.

    Motor Graders

In 1967, Deere introduced the JD570, which the company claims was the first articulated-frame motor grader. The innovative machine allowed operators to put the blade in the bank cut from the driver’s seat. Deere continued to engineer new motor grader technology in the following decades, adding the first hydrostatic front-wheel drive in the 1970s and offering variable horsepower on a variety of models during the 1980s. Just a couple of the modern technologies on Deere motor graders include Blade Stow, which lets the operator stow the blade just by pushing a button, and Auto-Gain, which automatically configures the Cross Slope gain setting based on existing conditions. These features are part of Deere’s SmartGrade machine control system for precision grading.

    Skid Steers

Deere introduced its four-wheel-drive JD24 loader in 1970, with a frame that could rotate 360 degrees for work in tight spaces. Deere’s skid-steer lineup has steadily grown to include track skid steers and a line of skid steers designed for agricultural use. Deere’s small-frame G-Series skid steers are versatile machines used across the landscaping, agricultural, material handling, and construction industries. MachineryTrader.com is a great resource to locate both track and wheel Deere skid steers.

    Wheel Loaders

Deere wheel loaders are available wide selection of sizes, as well as horsepower ranges and bucket capacities, to cost-effectively get the job done on jobsites small and large alike. Some of the most popular models have put in millions of hours; Deere’s 944K Hybrid Wheel Loader was one of the first electric drivetrain machines introduced by John Deere back in 2015, and the manufacturer announced in 2020 that the model had reached 1 million operating hours in the field. In 2021, Deere announced its G-, P-, and X-tiers to let customers find the right mix of performance and features for their applications.
